Job Summary

The City of Weslaco seeks a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Control Officer to join our team. As a key member of our public safety department, you will be responsible for ensuring the welfare and safety of animals within our community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigate reports of animal attacks or animal cruelty, and take necessary actions to prevent future incidents.
  • Capture and remove stray or abused animals from undesirable conditions, and provide humane care and shelter.
  • Write detailed reports of activities and maintain accurate records of impoundments and dispositions of animals.
  • Communicate effectively with animal owners to inform them of their pets' whereabouts and provide guidance on animal welfare and control laws.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure the cleanliness and safety of animal facilities and equipment.
  • Issue warnings or citations to individuals in connection with animal-related offenses, and educate the public on animal welfare and control laws.
  • Organize the adoption of unclaimed animals, and work with local shelters and rescue organizations to find forever homes for animals in need.
  • Respond to natural disaster emergencies, and supervise damage team members and volunteers to ensure effective response and recovery efforts.
  • Perform other similar or related duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; one to three years of experience in animal control or a related field preferred.
  • Valid Class C driver's license and insurability required; ability to obtain Basic Animal Control Officer License and Euthanasia Technician License within one year of employment.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen.
  • Successful completion of Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within three months of hire date.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
  • Work involves frequent and recurring assignments requiring strenuous effort and endurance, or quick reflexes to perform the work.
  • Lifting, moving, and carrying on a continuous basis for extended periods of time.
  • Regular travel on foot or bicycle over rough terrain or barriers, or the potential need to subdue or restrain violent persons or animals.
