Diagnostic Imaging Specialist

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Imaging Specialist to join our team at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. As a key member of our radiology department, you will be responsible for performing medically prescribed radiographic procedures with precision and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate knowledge of hospital and radiology information systems as they relate to radiology.
- Correctly choose patient information from HIS/RIS system in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Maintain supplies and cleanliness of space, restock supplies as needed.
- Notify supervisor of any shortage of supplies.
- Assist section in completion of special projects, reports, and activities.
- Maintain cooperative and professional relationships with patients, physicians, nurses, and office and clinical staff.
- Demonstrate skill in equipment setup, utilization, and proper maintenance procedure.
- Perform visual and manual quality control checks of X-ray equipment, including monitors used for routine dictation/reading of clinical images.
- Use imaging and peripheral equipment in a safe and productive manner in accordance with prescribed hospital, departmental, and manufacturers procedures.
- Recognize medical emergencies and notify nurse, PA, and/or MD immediately.
- Demonstrate knowledge of proper radiation safety procedures and incorporate them into the performance of all radiographic procedures.
- Use gonadal shielding on all patients whenever possible.
- Restrict beam to the smallest possible area, ensuring the least possible exposure to the patient without compromising quality.
- Eliminate accidental exposures to X-ray by all persons.
- Maintain radiation detection badges and rings appropriately and return them as required.
- Perform transmission and/or segmentation for transmission to PACS in a complete and proper anatomic display.
- Generate high-quality hard copies of images when necessary.
- Use efficient methods and complete examinations assigned in a reasonable amount of time.
- Maintain cleanliness of radiographic area.
- Prepare equipment and supplies in advance for future exams.
- Make alterations in work schedule for STAT and emergency cases.
- Alter work patterns to satisfy the needs of the patient and medical staff.
- Follow special instructions indicated on radiographic requisition.
- Independently implement patient procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards.
- Explain procedures and equipment to patients clearly.
- Answer patient questions to ensure understanding and patient satisfaction.
- Provide patient comfort before, during, and after procedures, and maintain an ongoing rapport with patients throughout the procedure to ease any anxiety.
- Provide patient privacy at all times.
- Position patients and radiographic equipment appropriately for the body part(s) to be radiographed and adjust equipment settings accordingly to ensure maximum information is obtained.
- Use lead markers appropriately.
- Follow accepted radiologic procedures.
- Ensure all X-rays completed are of high quality.
- Use positioning and immobilizing devices to improve radiographic quality.
- Consider variety of protocols and rationale in determining radiographic positioning and technique.
- Use standard procedures to identify the correct patient using two identifiers (full name and birth date).
- Check patient wristband by name to ensure patient ID matches examination requisition.
- Call patient by last name, asking patient to confirm their identity by stating their first name.
- Introduce self to patients.
- Review patient requisition and understand the type of exam required by each requisition and confer with medical staff regarding clarification when necessary.
- Seek information or ask for assistance from supervisor regarding difficult or questionable results.
- Follow accepted radiologic procedures and use medical information to determine type of protocol required for radiographic examination.
- Consult policy and procedure manuals and/or other reference materials as necessary to ensure actions conform to established protocols.
- Follow special instructions indicated on radiographic requisition.
- Recognize need for and follow isolation precautions.
- Effectively assess patient information and status, and follow appropriate procedure(s) accordingly.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the HIS and access patient data for verification of orders.
- Competent in scheduling exams in RIS from the order entry queue and/or demonstrate the ability to modify exams when necessary.
- Knowledgeable of the total cycle of RIS patient tracking.
- Follow departmental policy of documenting begin, complete, and departure times, when appropriate, in the RIS.
- Working knowledge of film library functions.
- Maintain confidentiality on matters to which they are privileged.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
