Product Engineer Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Product Engineer to join our Engineering team at Helen of Troy. As a Product Engineer, you will be responsible for evaluating and advising on the functional and technical aspects of new product design in collaboration with outside design firms. You will drive new product quality and functions in cooperation with manufacturing partners, improve existing product function and quality, and solve quality problems with existing products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Critique designs received from design firms, including reviews of designs provided as CAD files, and solicit feedback from factories.
  • Input changes, send required changes to the design firm, and discuss changes with the design firm.
  • Aid in the review process, as well as order and produce design prototypes.
  • Review pre-production samples from the factory.
  • Submit samples of the product after the factory begins producing a design.
  • Review samples and provide input about required changes.
  • Approve the project for production when the samples have reached an acceptable level of quality.
  • Review designs with the factory, involving answering factory questions on the design and deciding whether the requested changes are reasonable.
  • Meet with the design firms to provide design input concerning design decisions related to cost and manufacturing.
  • Work with internal or external teams to develop firmware and electronics, when applicable.
  • Build proof-of-concept prototypes for products such as coffee makers, grinders, and various plug and battery-powered products.
  • Prepare designs for quoting and review quotes, including producing parts lists (i.e., BOMs) for products, manufacturing documentation, any questions, or notes, and making decisions about material types and manufacturing methods.
  • Review quotes and compare quotes from different vendors.
  • Design product testing procedures and conduct testing. Ensure that a product meets standards of performance and quality. Perform standard testing, i.e., drop testing and other testing specifically crafted around the task of a particular product.
  • Contemplate and develop new product concepts. Build a prototype of the product and have the design completed by a design firm or fully design the product to be produced by a factory.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and provide corrective action.
  • Basic troubleshooting of electrical systems and work with internal/external teams for corrective action.
  • Work with the quality team to solve problems that arise with products that are already in production.
  • Work with electrical compliance teams for product certification.
  • Identify issues with products already in production and develop and implement fixes or improvements.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electromechanical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience relevant to this role.
  • Good working knowledge of plastic materials, injection molding, sheet metal, and die casting.
  • Fundamental understanding of electrical systems and ability to troubleshoot.
  • Basic understanding of electrical schematics.
  • Ability to write basic code using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or other similar programs.
  • Intermediate knowledge of either CREO or SolidWorks CAD software.
  • General shop skills and equipment knowledge (drill presses, band saws, table saws, etc.).
  • Electrical and mechanical prototyping skills.
  • Ability to travel to China (approx. 2-4 times/year).
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with global teams and products manufactured in Asia.
  • Experience working on consumer electronics.
