Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Prosecution and Case Management: Maintain a thorough understanding of constitutional law, federal law, and Kansas statutes to make informed prosecutorial decisions. Prepare and present cases in court, including reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and making persuasive arguments.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Foster positive working relationships with law enforcement, the judiciary, defense attorneys, crime victims, and community-based organizations. Represent the State of Kansas in cases beyond the 10th Judicial District, as needed.
  • Professional Development: Stay up-to-date with continuing legal education requirements and pursue elective courses to enhance subject matter expertise. Assume responsibility for the professional development and organizational advancement of internal and external partners.
Requirements
  • Assistant District Attorney I: Juris Doctorate and active Kansas license to practice law. May require a KS/MO driver's license. Prosecution experience, such as a legal internship, is preferred.
  • Assistant District Attorney II: Juris Doctorate, active Kansas license to practice law, and three years of prosecution experience. Experience as lead counsel in at least 10 criminal jury trials, 30 criminal bench trials, or some combination thereof is required. May require a KS/MO driver's license. Demonstrated ability to engage with the criminal justice community and community-based agency partners is preferred.
Working Conditions

This position may require handling physical evidence, exposure to disturbing materials, and working additional hours during times of jury trials and on-call. Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions.
