Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician to join our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the efficient and safe dispensing of medications to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the technical aspects of pharmacy drug distribution activities to ensure standard operating procedures are in alignment with automation capabilities.
  • Evaluate and analyze workflow and coordinate all work activities involved with Pharmacy automation.
  • Ensure that automated dispensing data is archived within established guidelines for each type of equipment.
  • Troubleshoot problems with all automated dispensing equipment when production is compromised and alert appropriate personnel.
  • Provide data for workload reports and process improvement projects to appropriate supervisors.
  • Support inpatient services through distribution of medication to inpatient units, aseptic admixture preparation, maintenance, and operation of automated prepackaging and dispensing equipment, assembly, and documentation of controlled substance requests, and properly packaging with documentation of single unit of use medications.
  • Support outpatient services prescription filling, pharmacy phone triage, window prescription dispensing, narcotic vault assignments, maintenance, and operation of automated prescription dispensing equipment, and packaging of mail out prescriptions.
  • Assist as deemed necessary by the pharmacy supervisors, in any patient care area (including inpatient and outpatient pharmacy) to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services.
  • Prepare, fill, and dispense controlled substance according to policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled inventories every 72 hours and daily if needed according to regulations and policies.
  • Assist the Controlled Substance Compliance Inspectors to complete the monthly inspections.
  • Verify, stock, and replace outdated CS medications from stock - including inpatient wards, inpatient/outpatient storage cabinets, vaults.
  • Maintain accurate electronic inventory through decrementing prescriptions, entering received inventory, transferring to automated dispensing cabinets, dispensing on green sheets, and transferring to other dispensing vaults.
  • Serve as an ordering officer for pharmacy service, delegated by the VA National Acquisition Center (NAC) while maintaining annual training requirements.
  • Initiate ordering requirements of pharmaceuticals, specialty, and supply items through pharmacy prime vendors multi complex accounts or other mandatory sources.
  • Monitor the status of deliveries, reconciling invoices to ensure quantities invoiced are accounted and received.
  • Work one on one with vendors and suppliers to resolve regular problems and discuss with lead or management as indicated.
  • Procure all types of pharmaceuticals including controlled and non-controlled drugs within established VA ordering guidelines, policies, and procedures within inventory management specialized area with the understanding of proper budget utilization.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: (1) Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).OR (2) National Health-care Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
  • English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
