Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Corrections (DOC), Facilities Maintenance Division. The mission of DOC is to ensure public safety for citizens of the District of Columbia by providing an orderly, safe, secure, and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates.

Duties and Responsibilities

Perform maintenance and repairs on water and sewage systems, including installation and maintenance of pipes, valves, and fittings. Work from building plans, blueprints, and work orders to complete tasks. Provide on-the-job training to inmate workers and monitor their work. Troubleshoot and repair issues with water and sewage systems, including leaks and obstructions. Prepare and submit reports on work completed, materials used, and job status.

Qualifications and Education

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair. Measurement and layout skills. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Troubleshooting skills. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.

Licensures and Certification

Journeyman or Master Plumber license in the District of Columbia. Backflow Certification is preferred.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a correctional institution with and around inmates. Adherence to institutional safety and prevention guidelines is required. Work may be performed in excavations under adverse conditions, including wet, muddy, cold, or in closely cramped areas with extreme high temperatures.
