Job Summary

The Operating Room Nurse at Abrazo West Campus is responsible for circulating in the operating room and assisting physicians with advanced tasks or equipment during surgical procedures. This role requires a high level of pressure tolerance and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares for surgical procedures by completing patient assessments and reviewing patient charts, diagnostics, and labs. Reports abnormal results to physicians and other care providers.
  • Formulates and initiates a plan of care based on patient-specific needs and medical plans. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to review and revise the plan of care as needed.
  • Prepares for surgical procedures by ensuring all necessary supplies and instruments are available and the operating room is set up appropriately.
  • Documents surgical procedures in the patient record, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.
  • Demonstrates aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure, participating in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges, and disposing of sharps and trash in designated areas.
  • Ensures surgeon preference cards are accurate and assists with OR turnover between cases, participating in stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning operating rooms.
  • Participates in training and orientation of surgical staff and students, as assigned.
  • Follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, specimen handling, sharp handling, time-out procedures, radiation and laser safety, and infection control.

Requirements

  • Current, valid RN license in the state of practice
  • BLS certification
  • ACLS certification
  • One year of operating room experience in the acute care setting
  • Preferred experience: 1 year in Level 1 trauma OR setting
