As an Outpatient Coding Specialist, you will be integral to our team, ensuring precise assignment of Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes and modifiers.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Accurate Coding: Assign E&M, ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on thorough medical record documentation.
  • Data Abstraction: Identify and extract information for audits and specialized studies.
  • Staff Collaboration: Work closely with Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) personnel to ensure clear and effective documentation.
  • Education and Training: Conduct individual or group training sessions to inform MTF staff on coding matters.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Maintain delinquency reports to guarantee timely completion of tasks.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7 am – 5 pm (flexible 9-hour shift with a 1-hour meal break)
  • Weekly Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Pay Rate: $20-$24/hr.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: A minimum of three years of recent experience in outpatient medical environments, including E&M, CPT, and HCPCS code assignment across various medical specialties.
  • Skills: Strong computer and communication skills, along with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, and coding guidelines.
  • Certifications: Required to hold one of the following certifications: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, or CCS-P.
  • Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.

Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily sedentary work with occasional lifting of medical records.
  • Daily use of computer programs and monitors.
  • Possible prolonged periods of walking, standing, sitting, or bending.

Continued Education:

Contract medical coders are required to maintain necessary continuing education hours to keep certifications current at no expense to the government.
