Vicarious Surgical is seeking an experienced Associate Director of Hardware Engineering to lead our team in Waltham, MA. This role will be responsible for managing a team of engineers focused on the development of capital equipment and single-use disposables associated with our surgical robot.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop mechanical components, systems, equipment, and packaging.
- Collaborate with senior management to establish strategic plans and objectives.
- Contribute to the development of functional strategy and effectively cascade strategy.
- Lead a mid-sized team of talented mechanical engineers and Technical Leads in the preparation of detailed designs and drawings, design testing, and prototype fabrication.
- Coach the team in developing the mechanical aspects of two pieces of capital equipment and single-use disposables, guiding them through all phases of product development.
- Lead teams to develop new methods and solve complex matters.
- Provide professional guidance and use concepts to develop resolutions to critical items.
- Display ability to inspire others, communicate, and motivate, gain trust, and have others look to them for vision and guidance.
- Create formal networks with key decision-makers and be widely recognized as a thought leader by both internal and external partners.
- Resolve issues with team members, suggest different approaches when needed.
- Shape and grow the team by identifying and closing gaps and participating in the hiring process.
- Partner closely with Project Management and multiple Project Technical Leads to review, prioritize, and coordinate development schedules.
- Update development schedules of subsystems and report status updates to senior management.
- Drive comprehensive verification and validation strategies at the subsystem and system level.
- Collaborate with other technical leaders to develop organizational best practices.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 15+ years of industry experience, including 5+ years in program management and 5+ years of direct people management.
- Ability to manage and interact with multiple stakeholders and disciplines required.
- Ability to review and understand engineering drawings, GD&T, and tolerance analyses.
- Strong understanding of Mechanical Design, Design for Manufacturing/Inspection, and various assembly techniques.
- Comfort with and understanding of the interplay between various components of a complex, electromechanical system.
- Prior experience with verification and validation plans to advance from prototype designs to finished products.
- Experience with medical device product development and passion for excellence.
- Prior direct work with external development partners and manufacturers preferred.
- Experience with IEC 60601 preferred.
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas and give/receive constructive feedback.
- Passion for employee development.
