Principal Planner

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Planner to join our team at Snohomish County Planning and Development Services. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing leadership and technical expertise in various planning functions, including project management, review, and administration of complex land use development applications.

• Act as project manager for assigned planning functions, providing leadership and technical expertise in various planning fields.
• Develop and evaluate customer service functions and technical assistance to agencies, groups, and individuals.
• Formulate integrated regional, county, and long-range plans, plan implementation strategies, and regulations.
• Organize and present policy recommendations and plan proposals to policymakers and the general public.
• Coordinate and evaluate the development applications review process, including permit completeness, conformance with plans, regulations, and codes.
• Represent the PDS Department and Snohomish County in negotiations with other agencies and jurisdictions.
• Provide technical expertise and assistance in the preparation of staff reports and recommendations, develop oral and written presentations, and make presentations to decision-making bodies.

• Masters degree in urban planning, environmental studies, geography, or a related field.
• Three years of experience in planning work related to the specific requirements of the position, including two years of supervisory experience.
• Ability to mediate and resolve planning issues involving opposing interest groups.
• Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of professional, technical, and clerical staff.
• Ability to analyze and resolve work-related problems.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations governing assigned duties.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with all levels of county management and staff, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
