About the Role:

The Correctional Healthcare Nurse will work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, correctional officers, and administrators to ensure the well-being of the incarcerated population.

This role requires the ability to address the specific challenges and limitations of the correctional environment while providing care to the patient population.

The Correctional Healthcare Nurse will utilize their knowledge to provide routine and emergency healthcare in a correctional facility setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
  • Perform focused interviews to identify specific patient needs
  • Assess signs and symptoms indicating physiologic and psychosocial changes in the patient's condition
  • Conduct health histories on newly-admitted inmates
  • Make referrals of inmates to the staff physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, or mental health professional when necessary
  • Determine the need for emergency hospital care and ensure that all medication is administered in accordance with standard operating procedures and as ordered by the authorizing authority
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data and information from healthcare members and document actual and/or potential nursing diagnoses
  • Document the patient's plan of care using identified nursing diagnoses, expected patient outcomes, and selected nursing interventions
  • Identify and prioritize actions based on patient care requirements
  • Monitor consistency between patient plan of care and actions of medical staff
  • Perform interventions according to identified priorities, plan of care, and hospital policies and patient care outcome standards
  • Initiate and evaluate patient education
  • Revises the plan of care according to evaluation, changes in medical plan of care, and effective/ineffective nursing interventions
  • Document patient's response to nursing and other interventions
  • Supervise, train, and direct other healthcare professionals on site such as LPNs, CNAs, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned/necessary

Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse License for the state in which the nurse practices
  • Minimum of one year of correctional healthcare experience preferred
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable
  • Current CPR if applicable
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if applicable
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
  • Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
