Dental Hygienist

This position is located in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, and is part of the Indian Health Service. The successful candidate will provide professional health care services to the Zuni Community Health Center Dental Department.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide advanced prophylactic and preventative dental procedures to patients with periodontal disease and related dental abnormalities.
- Conduct preliminary dental examinations for new and current patients.
- Review patient medical records and dental history to ensure proper dental treatment.
- Inspect mouth and throat for evidence of oral cancer, cavities, calculus, and deep periodontal pockets.
- Review and interpret x-rays to identify tooth structures.
- Refer abnormalities of cavities, traumatic occlusion, and suspicious lesions to the dentist.
- Prepare dental hygiene treatment plans for patients, including problem assessment, type of oral hygiene, and appointment scheduling as per dentist recommendations.
- Perform complete oral prophylaxis, including scaling and root planning, on ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients.
- Administer local anesthesia as required by the treatment plan.
- Instruct patients in oral hygiene practices, brushing, flossing techniques, and periodontal aids.
- Perform various other dental procedures as directed by the supervising dentist.
- Serve as a consultant to other health care professionals in developing appropriate and comprehensive health care plans for patients.
- Provide direct patient care through evaluation and treatment programs, including patient and family instruction to facilitate effective communication or eating at home.
- Independently manage a caseload of patients referred for dental evaluation and treatment.
- Exercise judgment in selecting instruments and determining the type and length of hygiene treatment appropriate for individual patients.
- Document each patient encounter in the electronic health record and other IHS forms in a timely manner, including necessary documentation related to billing.
- Maintain satisfactory standards of competence in this profession, including professional judgment and diagnosis for specific medical conditions or treatments.
- Abide by Zuni Community Health Center mandatory policies and procedures and attend any mandatory training requirements provided by Zuni Community Health Center.
- Graduate degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited school of Dentistry.
- State License to practice Dental Hygiene, in good standing in the United States or any US territories as required by IHS.
- Relevant experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
- Radiology Certification.
Dental hours are between 7:30 AM to 05:30 PM. Two tours: 07:30 AM- 05:00 PM and 08:00 AM to 05:30 PM.
