Role Overview:

This pivotal role involves overseeing and managing all shop operations, including directing labor hours, scheduling equipment, collaborating with the HR department, approving equipment repairs, procuring parts, and making decisions regarding equipment repairs. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of state-owned equipment both in the shop and on the roadways, particularly when breakdowns occur during transit or highway maintenance activities. The INDOT Mechanic Supervisor also coordinates repair efforts for vehicles and equipment from other agencies. A key responsibility of this role is the upkeep of winter snow and ice management equipment, along with supervising the personnel involved in these tasks.

Salary:

The starting salary for this position is typically set at an annual rate of $53, with potential adjustments based on education and experience.

Mechanic Positions:

Candidates possessing a current CDL will receive an additional $1 per hour for this role. Those without a CDL will be granted 90 days to obtain one, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will also earn an additional $1 per hour upon successful acquisition of their CDL.

INDOT offers a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 annually for full-time Mechanic positions, covering the purchase, replacement, and repair of tools necessary for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT's fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance machinery, and other fleet items.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role include:

  • Diagnosing electronic engine control systems using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Repairing systems with modern diagnostic equipment.
  • Identifying, troubleshooting, and replacing engine electronic sensors.
  • Troubleshooting and calibrating hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications.
  • Test driving various motorized equipment.
  • Repairing, rebuilding, and replacing parts such as electrical components and brake systems.
  • Performing preventative maintenance and servicing on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintaining repair and service records.
  • Attending training sessions and updating manuals.
  • Operating welding equipment for machinery and equipment repairs.
  • Conducting inventories of machinery and ordering necessary parts.
  • Maintaining cleanliness in the garage and with tools.

What You'll Need for Success:

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree with 1+ years of experience, or
  • An Associate's Degree with 3+ years of experience, or
  • At least 5+ years of relevant experience in a similar role.

Related certifications and coursework may be considered in lieu of formal education or experience.

  • Knowledge of safety practices related to heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Extensive experience in vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Proficiency in hydraulics and diagnostic techniques.
  • Ability to repair equipment used in various highway maintenance activities.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools for vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Capability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina for lifting and performing manual tasks.
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Requirement to provide personal tools and agency-approved safety footwear.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may involve direct supervision of one or more staff members.
