Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and organized Science Laboratory Coordinator to join our team at Contra Costa Community College District. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and organizing laboratory activities for assigned science laboratory areas or disciplines. This includes coordinating and scheduling laboratory activities, assisting in evaluating laboratory activities, and assisting in department budget preparation and administration. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for ordering and maintaining laboratory equipment and instruments, coordinating the operation of department facilities, and responding to critical laboratory health and safety emergencies.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan and coordinate laboratory operations for assigned science discipline
Maintain and store a sufficient inventory of scientific supplies and equipment in laboratory facilities
Provide technical lead support and serve as a resource to faculty, students, and staff
Direct or perform the timely preparation, set-up and issuing of materials, equipment and lockers for use in student laboratory demonstrations, experiments, exercises and exams
Perform complex skilled technical duties to ensure efficient lab operations
Develop and implement new or modified laboratory policies, as required
Recommend environmental, health and safety-related improvements and modifications in laboratory procedures and operations
Monitor production of, collect, and appropriately process hazardous waste materials and toxic chemicals resulting from laboratory classes
Maintain material safety data sheets for all department chemicals and products
Provide appropriate student safety training; maintain records of training
Assist in developing and monitoring department budgets in coordination with management and faculty
Coordinate workload of laboratory; monitor assignments of other assigned staff
Collaborate with management and faculty to identify part-time staffing needs
Conduct statistical review to analyze and assess the service effectiveness in assigned laboratories
Assist in the selection of student assistants and/or tutors; provide training, functional and technical supervision, and evaluation of student assistants and/or tutors; review and approve student assistant and/or tutor timecards for accuracy and submit to a departmental supervisor or manager

Requirements:

Two (2) years of responsible experience coordinating a laboratory in a college, public health, hospital, clinical or research setting performing discipline-specific tests and processes, including experience in workplace safety
Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a discipline relevant to assigned area, or equivalent
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificate. Possession of, or ability to obtain, Cal OSHA Certification

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience and/or knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of standard classroom laboratory supplies and equipment
Experience and/or knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of standard physics, engineering, astronomy lab equipment
Experience and/or knowledge in recruiting, training, and supervising student workers
The ability to successfully manage inventories and budgets
