Mechanical Maintenance Operator

Under the guidance of supervisory staff or based on written or verbal directives, blueprints, or sketches, executes tasks in the trades necessary for the effective upkeep of the facility. Guided by the Supervisor, carries out duties in the following general areas:
UTILITY MAINTENANCE
Conducts general troubleshooting and maintenance activities, which encompass mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, piping, welding, and basic electrical repairs. Basic electrical tasks include, but are not limited to, replacing bulbs, disconnecting machinery, repositioning equipment, and reconnecting them for testing. Unplugging equipment rated at 120 volts or less, repairing items such as cord replacements, and reconnecting to verify functionality. Assists electricians with tasks requiring multiple personnel. Performs maintenance and preventive maintenance on facility systems, production machinery, basic lift truck battery upkeep, and other equipment as directed. Responsible for cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment utilized in job performance. Engages in snow removal as required.
POLLUTION CONTROL OPERATIONS
Responsibilities include emptying and cleaning filter presses and water clarifiers; executing all tasks to ensure the proper functioning of filtering presses, wastewater systems, tanks, pumps, and plumbing in the filter press area. This includes loading, unloading, changing bags, and cleaning bag filtering systems, as well as cleaning plates and pipes and replacing both air-operated and non-hardwired electrical pumps in the filter press area. Responsible for maintaining cleanliness in the filter press, tank, and clarifier areas. Operates lift trucks to transport containers or equipment within the facility. Additionally, performs all barrel plating maintenance tasks, including but not limited to, barrel upkeep, motor sprocket changes, gear box adjustments, and chain tension modifications. Other duties may be assigned. Remains informed about current policies related to both areas.
All employees are expected to:
- Complete and successfully pass a formal training program lasting six months.
- Adhere to safety protocols and housekeeping standards.
- Ensure the quality and safe operation of items being worked on.
- Accurately complete process and quality documentation.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Communicate respectfully with colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should possess a two-year technical degree in maintenance or equivalent experience, or current knowledge in essential job requirements. Must have or be capable of acquiring knowledge in several essential job functions within a reasonable timeframe, including but not limited to:
- Familiarity with powered and non-powered hand tools, bench tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to meet lifting and climbing requirements, including working at heights of 20 feet or more and occasional work in confined spaces.
- Operation of forklifts and aerial lift platforms.
- Knowledge of test, measurement, and diagnostic tools.
- Experience with bearing splitters and pullers.
- Ability to perform coupling alignments.
- Familiarity with pipe threading equipment.
- Understanding of Chemical Right To Know, Confined Space, and Lockout Tagout Authorized training.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Basic knowledge of minor electrical repairs.
- Experience with SMAW (stick) and GMAW (MIG or wire feed) welding techniques.
- Knowledge of flame and plasma cutting methods.
- Experience with metal shearing and braking.
- Ability to acquire a Boiler License (minimum of a Minnesota Special Engineers boiler license or obtain one within one year of employment).
- Mechanical aptitude in troubleshooting and repairing pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- Analytical skills to identify problems, gather information, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and manage several abstract and concrete variables.

Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
