Position Overview
The Respiratory Care Assistant role is designed for active respiratory therapy students who have successfully completed their first year in an accredited respiratory program. This position is integral to our mission of advancing health together.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of practice.
- Work under the supervision of a Registered Respiratory Therapist, adhering to physician orders.
- Provide education to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Monitor patient responses to therapy and document findings in medical records.
- Ensure the correct setup, safety, and functionality of all necessary equipment and supplies.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Therapeutic Procedures
- Administer oxygen supply systems and humidity therapy.
- Perform manual resuscitation and small volume nebulizer treatments.
- Conduct arterial punctures and ECGs (if performed by the hiring institution).
- Provide airway clearance therapy and incentive spirometry.
Qualifications
Active enrollment in a two-year accredited respiratory care program (Associate's Degree or equivalent) and completion of the first semester is required. The student must register with the appropriate board before providing respiratory care procedures.
Work Environment
This role involves interaction with patients of all ages, family members, and healthcare professionals across various areas of the Duke University Health System.
