Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Archivist Assistant to join our team at George Mason University. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing complex archival collections, including the Joel Snyder audio description archive, and will work closely with the Manuscripts and Archives Librarian to ensure the highest level of quality and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process archival collections, including appraisal, arrangement, and description, using current best practices and standards.
  • Create EAD-compliant finding aids using ArchivesSpace and ensure accurate and consistent metadata.
  • Assure proper handling, physical housing, and storage of collection materials, including identification and referral of items for preservation or conservation.
  • Participate in the professional life of the University Libraries and George Mason University, including working groups and committees as appropriate.
  • Report processing-related statistics throughout the year and in the annual report.
Requirements
  • MLS/MLIS/MSLIS degree with archives concentration from an ALA accredited program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in project management, archival processing, and multiple formats, including textual, visual, and audiovisual.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, and standards, including DACS and EAD.
  • Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational skills, highly detail-oriented, and excellent written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a special collections or academic archives setting.
  • Experience processing medium-large archival collections.
  • Experience processing audiovisual collections.
  • Familiarity with preservation and conservation issues and best practices.
  • Familiarity with ArchivesSpace, LCSH, LCTGM, and other archival and metadata tools.
