About the Position

The City of Saint Paul is seeking skilled Heavy Truck Mechanics and Vehicle Technicians to perform complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic power systems repairs and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Service, repair, and maintain City vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate various testing devices to determine the nature and extent of malfunctions or damage.
  • Inspect, diagnose, service, and repair multiplex electrical, hydraulic pump, and air-conditioning systems.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment and software applications.
  • Perform repairs and fabricate mounts, hangers, containers, and related units for holding, storing, and mounting tools and equipment.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and related equipment to maintain and/or repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic power systems.
  • Document and record all maintenance, repairs, parts, labor costs, and other related information in electronic fleet information systems.
Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a two-year heavy truck and/or heavy equipment repair vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience maintaining and repairing heavy trucks and/or equipment.
  • Successful completion of a two-year automotive repair vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) repairing automobiles, trucks, and/or heavy equipment.
  • Successful completion of a documented, mechanical/repair apprenticeship program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, automobiles/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment.
  • Successful completion of a small engine or turf and grounds equipment vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience performing maintenance and repairs on some of the following equipment classes; small engine/grounds/turf equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment.
  • Six years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance and repairs on some of the following equipment classes: small engine/grounds/turf equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment.
