Road Maintenance Technician Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Road & Bridge Supervisor, the Road Maintenance Technician is tasked with the upkeep of specific sectors of unpaved and gravel roads. This position is vital for ensuring the safety of roadways, effective drainage management, vegetation control, and providing assistance during winter weather conditions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates a variety of machinery for road upkeep
  • Maintains drainage systems and executes necessary repairs
  • Distributes gravel and aids in snow clearance
  • Conducts mowing and manages brush control
  • Installs drainage culverts and access points
  • Keeps accurate records and oversees equipment maintenance
  • Identifies and reports road hazards and machinery issues
  • Ensures a safe working environment
  • Promotes positive interactions with the public

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Proficient mechanical skills for equipment operation, basic arithmetic capabilities, strong communication skills, and the ability to interpret maps and follow detailed instructions.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, with 1-3 years of relevant experience recommended. A Class A Commercial Driver's License is required or must be obtained.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to work in various environmental conditions, lift weights up to 100 pounds, operate vehicles, and communicate effectively with team members.

EQUIPMENT USED: Includes motor graders, backhoes, weed eaters, lawn mowers, and more.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Requires familiarity with road maintenance practices and construction plans. Responsible for addressing road deterioration and issues caused by weather.

DECISION MAKING: Involves identifying and rectifying road deficiencies, prioritizing tasks, and managing resources efficiently.

SUPERVISION/ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports directly to the Road & Bridge Supervisor and may oversee subordinate staff.

PERSONAL INTERACTIONS: Engages daily with the public, colleagues, and supervisors.
