Position Responsibilities
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a vital role in the interdisciplinary team, providing patient-centered acute nursing care to individuals with diverse medical conditions or those preparing for or recovering from surgical procedures. The LPN collaborates with and operates under the supervision of the registered nurse.
Key Duties Include:
- Organizing, prioritizing, and delivering care to groups of patients under the Registered Nurse's guidance.
- Building effective relationships with patients and families to develop personalized care plans.
- Collaborating with healthcare team members to implement care plans and educational strategies to maintain and restore health.
- Educating patients and families on health promotion and maintenance to enhance comfort.
- Administering direct nursing care, including assessments, medication administration, and assistance with daily living activities.
- Performing sterile and non-sterile treatments in line with hospital policies.
- Reporting patient status changes to the RN and healthcare team members promptly.
- Collaborating continuously with the RN regarding nursing interventions and patient care.
- Providing direction and supervision to patient care associates while demonstrating professional judgment and time-management skills.
- Advocating for patients and their families.
- Participating in the orientation of new staff and students as directed.
- Contributing to unit objectives and performance improvement initiatives.
- Maintaining a safe and organized patient/unit environment.
- Fostering a healthy work atmosphere within the practice setting.
- Engaging in self and peer evaluations.
- Promoting professional involvement.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing or completion of a pharmacology course.
- 1-2 years of experience in a rehabilitation or acute care setting preferred; new graduates considered based on clinical experiences.
- LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure required.
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation certification required.
- Understanding of practical nursing principles and skills for patient care.
- Familiarity with examinations, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients.
- Ability to calculate dosages as necessary.
- Skill in administering various treatments and medications as directed.
- Competence in taking vital signs and maintaining accurate records.
- Proficiency in computer skills and familiarity with EHR systems preferred.
- Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions to ensure a safe work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
