Financial Analyst and Staff Accountant

Classification: 40 hours/week, 12-month, Exempt, Staff, Benefitted

Reports To: Dual to Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Controller

The ideal candidate will have experience reconciling financial statement accounts, financial planning, budgeting, and analysis, preferably within an educational or non-profit environment. This role requires strong analytical skills, the ability to communicate complex financial information to various stakeholders, and a commitment to supporting the mission of Mercersburg Academy.

• Maintain and reconcile company financial accounts.
• Prepare journal entries and reconcile accounts.
• Maintain balance sheet schedules and perform the month-end and year-end close process.
• Assist with preparing monthly financial statements and ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting principles.
• Review monthly financial reports. Analyze fluctuations, comparing actual results to budgeted forecasts on a monthly and annual basis.
• Communicate issues with budget managers.
• Lead the budgeting process, working closely with department heads to ensure accurate and comprehensive submissions, evaluating the economic environment, and analyzing and compiling budget requests.
• Work with the school store manager, manage store inventory, adjust levels, and write reports consistent with established inventory control procedures. Work with vendors to acquire quick inventory turnover.
• Develop and maintain financial models to support budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning and recommending corrective actions.
• Support the annual audit process by preparing necessary documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
• Assist in the creation of business policies/procedures and ensure compliance.
• Assist in preparing tax returns, sales tax returns, and other regulatory filings.
• Prepare and distribute reports on restricted endowments and ensure compliance with donor requirements.
• Preparation of Ad hoc reports.
• Adhere to the highest professional standard in all work regarding the handling and access to sensitive information.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BA/BS degree is required; a degree in accounting, finance, or economics preferred.
• Proven experience in financial analysis.
• Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and GAAP principles preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Excel.
