Position Overview

As a Middle School Science Educator at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with grade-level teams to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to engage critically in scientific inquiry. Central to our Science curriculum is a passion for the subject and a focus on inquiry-based learning, which emphasizes student discourse and scientific practices. Our educators utilize diverse instructional methods to inspire a love for scientific exploration and analysis among students. By the end of eighth grade, students will be well-prepared for the academic independence and college readiness expected in our high schools.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Delivery

  • Teach an interdisciplinary curriculum aligned with NGSS, covering essential topics such as climate systems, the universe, energy transformations, and ecological interactions.
  • Encourage students to develop skills in questioning, modeling, data analysis, and conducting interactive laboratory experiments.
  • Utilize your enthusiasm for science to build confidence and meaningful engagement in the subject matter.
  • Foster an understanding of the interconnectedness of scientific fields and their relevance to local and global communities.

2. Data-Driven Instruction

  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal or instructional coach to analyze student work and assessment trends.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

3. Cultivating School Culture

  • Establish positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and heard.
  • Collaborate with families to provide necessary resources that support student learning.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching opportunities.
  • Engage in school-wide meetings to promote community, embody core values, and support student achievement.
  • Work with your grade-level team to set academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • Experience in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years preferred).
    • Academic background in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Teacher certification is not mandatory for consideration but must meet state eligibility requirements.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position ranges from $55,000 to $71,000, depending on factors such as relevant experience, education, and certifications.
