Wireless technologies are integral to all Apple devices, enhancing customer satisfaction.

Our unit is dedicated to researching and developing wireless technologies for future radio access networks across various layers (PHY, MAC, CP, DP). We seek an industry veteran with profound expertise in cutting-edge wireless technology.

In this position, you will lead an innovative research team responsible for pioneering disruptive radio access technologies over the next decade and managing a 3GPP standards team focused on Physical Layer and RF RAN groups.

Your responsibilities will include defining system-level concepts, proposing and investigating innovative ideas and algorithms, conducting complex system simulations, establishing rapid prototyping platforms to validate your concepts, and specifying RAN protocols for the upcoming (6G) cellular systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in link-level and system simulator modeling and framework development.
  • Employ a top-down approach to system design, starting from relevant use cases for Apple products, articulating problem statements, and arriving at groundbreaking solutions.
  • Evaluate the advantages of various proposals for addressing specific challenges.
  • Provide essential systems engineering support for rapid prototyping platform development through system requirements and design documentation.
Essential Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of communication system theory and wireless systems.
  • Strong expertise in physical layer waveform design, channel coding, and PHY/MAC procedures.
  • In-depth understanding of multi-antenna techniques, including Massive MIMO, mmWave Beamforming, and mmWave mesh networks.
  • Familiarity with current cellular or Wi-Fi communication standards, such as 5G (NR), 4G (LTE), IEEE 802.11ax, and IEEE 802.11ax/ay/az/be.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including probability, digital signal processing, linear algebra, and estimation techniques.
  • Proven track record of innovation in wireless system design.
  • Experience in object-oriented programming and wireless system simulator design and implementation.
  • Exposure to wireless system design and channel sounder design at very high frequencies (GHz, THz).
  • Familiarity with L2/L3 user plane and control plane protocol stacks.
  • Understanding of low-power design for mobile devices and wearables.
  • Knowledge of wireless system optimization for augmented reality, virtual reality, and automotive applications.
  • Experience with positioning and ranging-based services and solutions.
  • Familiarity with sensing technologies such as FMCW radar.
  • Strong foundation in machine learning concepts applicable to sensing and radio access networks.
  • Proficiency in Matlab, C/C++, and/or Python for algorithm development, modeling, and link-level simulation.

A solid understanding of mmWave antenna array design and RF system design for state-of-the-art mmWave transceivers is highly advantageous. The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team is essential.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree with over 10 years of relevant experience.

Compensation & Benefits:

At Apple, base pay is one component of our comprehensive compensation package, determined within a specified range. This structure allows for growth and advancement within your role.

The base pay range for this position is between $181,000 and $313,000, influenced by your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees have the opportunity to become shareholders through participation in discretionary employee stock programs.

Employees may also be eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards and can purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
