Job Title: Assistant Distribution Manager

Job Summary:

The Assistant Distribution Manager is a key member of the McLane Company Inc. team, responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the Distribution/Warehousing Department. This role involves providing general supervision of all warehouse supervisors and functional processes within the department, with a focus on planning, controlling, and directing all activities necessary for efficient order selecting, shipping, receiving, and general warehouse activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee training and scheduling for certain warehouse shifts to ensure optimal productivity and efficiency.
  • Minimize mistakes and waste in the warehouse operation by constant coordination and supervision, adhering to sanitation rules and regulations set forth by the Company and outside agencies (i.e. OSHA).
  • Ensure manpower needs for certain warehouse shifts are met and safeguard against negligent retention of substandard workers.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of procedures to receive/send, unload/load, sort, and store all incoming and outgoing freight accurately and efficiently.
  • Review warehouse layout and product slotting to maximize order-pulling efforts and minimize errors.
  • Continually monitor inventory levels and effectively communicate these needs with the Supply Chain department.
  • Help ensure that needed repairs to all warehouse equipment are completed in a timely and economic manner.
  • Maintain warehouse safety in accordance with both company and governmental standards (i.e. OSHA).
  • Help achieve monthly throughput goals (pieces received and shipped per man hour) as set forth by the Warehouse Manager.
  • Continually monitor certain overtime hours to ensure that proper manpower count needed to process the center's shipments is maintained.
  • Monitor warehouse damages to ensure warehouse shrink is at the lowest level possible.
  • Train and develop certain warehouse personnel to achieve departmental objectives and to increase a given employee's capacity to assume additional responsibilities in the future.
  • Assist the Warehouse Manager in researching and developing new techniques and procedures to increase the overall efficiency of the warehouse operation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in all facets of outbound and inbound warehousing, preferably in the food service industry.
  • Understanding of mainframe computer software relating to record keeping, preferably on AS 400.
  • Experience managing a large number of warehouse staff with experience in hiring, training, motivating Teammates, and resolving employee relations issues.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, and inter-company memos/outside correspondence.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting, planning, analytical and/or reporting experience, in positions with increasing responsibility is preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Understanding of financial statements and resulting cost implications, with the ability to identify financial issues and provide cost-effective solutions.
  • Effective presentation skills, with the ability to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, vendors, and employees.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with proven ability to work within the framework of the Team.
  • Knowledge of distribution systems and understanding of dispatch issues and procedures.
  • Ability to continuously walk, stand, and climb over the period of their shift.

Working Conditions:

  • The environment encompasses all areas of a Distribution Center.
  • This position may require work in hot and cold temperature extremes and exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, noise, potentially harmful chemicals, solvents, and components, and working in close proximity to other teammates.
