General Summary
The Agricultural Sales Consultant engages in on-farm sales discussions with both existing and potential clients to enhance retail sales of agricultural products such as feed, seed, fertilizers, crop protection agents, farm supplies, and related services. The sales territory may encompass multiple counties and involve various retail outlets. This role relies on a deep understanding of agricultural best practices, livestock management, crop production, and company offerings, alongside strong interpersonal skills to cultivate robust customer relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent on-site sales consultations with current and prospective clients. The sales territory may span several counties and include multiple retail locations. Strategically coordinate sales visits and travel plans to maximize customer interaction, ensure efficient service delivery, and meet sales objectives.
- Leverage interpersonal skills to build positive, long-lasting business relationships with clients. Provide expert guidance and information on farm management and production best practices. Assist in identifying challenges related to weeds, pests, and crops, and recommend suitable products and services to meet customer needs.
- Collaborate with the retail management team and General Manager to execute account strategies. Organize sales initiatives, develop prospect lists, gather market insights, and schedule product deliveries. Support sales efforts for commodities sold through retail channels.
- Coordinate necessary resources to address customer inquiries. Communicate effectively with Product Specialists, Buyers, Agronomists, Vendors, and management to resolve issues. Maintain strong connections with local agricultural universities and county extension services.
- Utilize the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool to keep accurate customer records, maintain prospect lists, and report weekly sales activities. Submit weekly fieldwork reports and expense vouchers to the appropriate manager.
- Encourage the use of financial programs and tools as part of sales strategies to enhance market share.
- Promote the company brand and business philosophy positively within the local community and sales region. Organize and lead grower meetings and participate in community events related to agriculture.
- Represent the company professionally in all communications and appearances. Adhere to the company dress code and maintain a clean and well-kept vehicle.
- Stay informed about industry trends, regulations, and updates to company products and services. Pursue continuous improvement in sales effectiveness and account management skills through various educational resources.
- Ensure safety in all work activities to prevent harm to oneself, customers, colleagues, equipment, or inventory. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required and comply with safety regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
A combination of relevant coursework and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Education: Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent education with related sales/agriculture experience.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of sales experience required, with knowledge of the agricultural or petroleum industry preferred.
Licensing: Valid Driver's License required. May require additional licenses such as Commercial Driver's License or Certified Crop Advisor License.
Retail Sales Skills
- Ability to apply knowledge of various agricultural products and services to provide accurate recommendations.
- Ability to utilize farm management and crop production knowledge to advise customers effectively.
Essential functions are primarily performed on-site at customer locations and retail stores. Regular outdoor work may expose the employee to varying weather conditions. Frequent travel using a company vehicle is required, with travel needs varying by location and season.
Exposure to potential hazards includes:
- Odors, fumes, and chemicals associated with agricultural products.
- Dust, dirt, and allergens related to farming and livestock.
- Sharp tools and equipment.
- Moving machinery and vehicles.
- Noise levels that may require hearing protection.
Physical Requirements
Physical activities may vary by location:
- Continuously: Bend, stoop, and use manual dexterity; lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Frequently: Balance, climb, and drive vehicles; lift and carry 30-50 pounds.
- Occasionally: Kneel and lift over 50 pounds with assistance.
