Firefighter/Paramedic

The City of Independence Ohio is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Firefighter/Paramedic to join our team. As a Firefighter/Paramedic, you will be responsible for responding to emergency calls, providing medical care, and conducting fire suppression activities.

• Respond to emergency calls and provide medical care to patients
• Conduct fire suppression activities, including entry, rescue, ventilating, and salvage work
• Perform fire scene investigation activities and fire inspections
• Act as a community relations representative to the public
• Perform related duties as assigned

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) supplemented by required firefighting and emergency medical paramedic training and some experience in emergency services
• Valid Ohio EMT-Paramedic certification
• Valid Ohio Firefighter I and II certification
• Valid Ohio driver's license with a good driving record (no major violations and/or no more than 6 points)
• Must have a current physical agility test at Tri-C or Auburn Career Center with a time of 5 minutes or less
• Must be a citizen of the United States
• Preferred to live within a 15 mile radius of the Fire Station due to importance of immediate need for response in an emergency
• Vision-Must have vision of not less than 20/30 binocular, either uncorrected, or corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 binocular wearers of glasses or hard contact lenses. (No uncorrected standard applies to successful long-term soft contact wearers.)
• Must possess the strength and physical ability to successfully perform the essential job functions of a Firefighter/Paramedic, and be free of medical conditions that would preclude one from successfully performing said functions or would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of oneself or others
• Must be of good moral character; Emotional stability and maturity also required
• Must pass a thorough screenings which may include any and/or all of the following: physical agility test, background investigation, pre-employment physical, drug screen and/or polygraph examination. Any final questions about a candidate's physical condition, capacity, vision, etc. will be resolved prior to appointment based on a recommendation provided by a doctor selected by the City

Shifts will be 8 to 24 hours in length. The City expects that all employees work a minimum number of hours per month and comply with all department training requirements (to be determined based on departmental needs). Starting rate of pay is $26.00 per hour with the possibility of bonus pay depending on the number of hours worked in a year (A part-time hire is not guaranteed future full-time employment.)
