Early Childhood Paraeducator

This role entails working for 3.5 hours each day across 170 days annually. Additionally, it includes 3.25 hours daily for 141 days each year.
First-year commitment: 7 hours per day for 4 days, followed by 2 days each subsequent year until certification is achieved.
Compensation: Level 5 on the PSE Salary Schedule - $ (Refer to PSE Salary Schedule for details).

Required Training:
The selected candidate must complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of employment.
Certification Requirements:
Candidates must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and obtain the General Paraeducator Certificate as mandated by state regulations. The Paraeducator Certificate Program is subject to state funding availability.
IMPORTANT: To qualify for an interview for this instructional paraeducator role, candidates must meet the following federal minimum employment criteria:
Minimum age of 18; Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; One of the following: Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment, hold an AA degree or higher, earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited institution, completed a registered apprenticeship program through the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, or successfully finished The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted with the application, but official documents will be required upon hire. TB Testing:
Proof of a passing TB (tuberculosis) test is required prior to official employment.
MMR Vaccine: Required.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position involves supporting the instructor in various activities for students, including meal preparation and cleanup, providing individual or small group instruction, monitoring student behavior, and supervising activities in the playground, gym, and during off-site events.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Depending on the specific assignment, the Paraeducator - ECEAP may undertake a combination of the following tasks:
1. Facilitate individual or small group instruction in diverse learning activities, including family-style meals to enhance comprehension of the material presented. Provide encouragement and support to achieve educational objectives as set by the instructor.
2. Collaborate with the instructor regarding individual student progress; adapt teaching methods to cater to a diverse range of student needs; consult with the instructor on remediation or enrichment activities.
3. Assist the instructor in maintaining records, logs, charts, and other documentation for assessing student progress.
4. Supervise student behavior in classrooms, during lunch and snack times, at bus boarding areas, on field trips, and in restrooms to ensure safe and appropriate conduct. Address behavioral issues and uphold discipline according to established policies.
5. Support students in mastering interpersonal and personal skills.
6. Establish effective communication with students, staff, and parents regarding student progress and safety, as well as community relations. Assist in coordinating parent visits to the classroom and home visits by the instructor.
7. Provide assistance to special needs students, including physical support and personal hygiene assistance.
8. Manage food setup, preparation, service, and general cleanup, including dishwashing and laundry, while ensuring cleanliness of tables.
9. May accompany the instructor on home visits to students, documenting observations and visit details.
10. Monitor students for any first aid needs and refer them for treatment as necessary.
11. Participate in various meetings and training sessions.
12. Assist in maintaining records related to attendance, meal counts, and budget adjustments to comply with local and ESD program requirements.
13. Keep a daily log of students' transportation information as per program requirements.
14. Collaborate as part of the instructional team to develop and implement programs and services for eligible children and families.
15. May have flexible hours to allow participation in family and community activities related to the program.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
16. Notify qualified district staff of any student issues.
17. Prepare and modify materials for student use, enrichment activities, and special projects under the guidance of the assigned instructor.
18. Handle preparation, duplication, collation, and distribution of materials; operate various office equipment.
19. Maintain the physical appearance of the classroom and other assigned areas; manage playground equipment and supplies as needed.
20. Provide backup support in the classroom as required; manage phone calls and filing of materials.
21. May serve on district committees or departmental teams, demonstrating appropriate and cooperative behavior while maintaining confidentiality in line with district ethical standards.
22. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Director of Special Services and receives guidance from assigned certificated staff.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
This role may involve frequent interruptions and requires dealing with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities, including physical or emotional disabilities. Candidates should be prepared to shift tasks and priorities as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The position may expose the individual to common infectious diseases carried by students, as well as high noise levels. Candidates may occasionally need to lift and position students and take precautions to avoid exposure to bodily fluids and cleaning compounds. The role requires standing for extended periods and may involve outdoor supervision in inclement weather. Additionally, candidates may need to visit student homes and engage in cooking and food preparation with a focus on safety awareness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, with one year of experience in an early childhood setting preferred. Candidates must possess a current CDA or an Early Childhood Education (ECE) certificate that meets or exceeds CDA requirements, or an AA/BA/MA in any field with 12 ECE credits, or an AA/BA/MA in any field along with a CDA.
Allowable Substitutions:
A high school diploma or GED with one year of experience in an early childhood setting is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and communication. Ability to engage with students in a warm and confident manner. Flexibility to adapt to changes in assignments, along with strong organizational skills. Capability to follow and provide instructions consistently. Maintain fairness and confidentiality while working with students. Learn and implement effective behavior management and instructional techniques. Knowledge of student safety protocols and procedures. Proficiency in using computers and various software for student instruction and record-keeping. Familiarity with general office equipment operation. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Maintain accurate records and fill in for instructors as needed during absences.
Licenses/Special Requirements:
Requires fingerprinting and a background check to ensure no convictions related to the abuse or neglect of minors. Must complete training in adherence to the district's infection control plan. Required to obtain first aid and CPR certification, as well as a Washington State food handler's permit. Proof of passing TB (tuberculosis) test is mandatory. Hepatitis-B immunization is offered.
