Laboratory Safety Coordinator

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the formulation and administration of the laboratory safety initiative within the Department of Natural and Health Sciences.
This role includes oversight of the Chemistry instructional laboratories, encompassing laboratory preparation, management of student assistants, and procurement of necessary supplies and equipment, as well as supervision of Chemistry research facilities.
This position is a full-time, year-round commitment under the guidance of the Department Chair. Key Responsibilities- Oversee and manage the daily setup of equipment and materials for Chemistry instructional labs
- Liaise with Chemistry faculty (both full-time and adjunct) to ascertain lab requirements, including the collection of syllabi and the organization of supply orders for courses
- Collaborate with the Lab Coordinator to facilitate the acquisition of all necessary supplies and equipment for both Chemistry instructional and research laboratories
- Organize and maintain an inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment pertinent to Chemistry
- Ensure the maintenance of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the Department of Natural & Health Sciences
- Systematically organize and uphold the Chemistry instructional labs, as well as preparatory and storage areas
- Administer the chemical hygiene and laboratory safety protocols for the Department of Natural and Health Sciences
- Deliver annual safety reports to the Department Chair and Chief Academic Officer regarding laboratory safety and hazardous waste management
- Ensure the proper disposal of chemical and hazardous waste generated from instructional and research laboratories
- Provide training for all science faculty (both full-time and part-time), Science Fellows, and student lab assistants on laboratory safety and equipment operation, with a focus on chemistry
- Maintain laboratory equipment on a daily basis for Chemistry
- Coordinate significant equipment repairs for the Department of Natural and Health Sciences
- Supervise Science Fellows within the Department of Natural and Health Sciences, including scheduling, safety education, meeting organization, and communication of updates and requirements with supervising faculty
- Oversee student lab assistants and Science Fellows in Chemistry instructional labs
- Manage daily operations within Brown Science Hall, particularly in coordinating repairs and addressing needs with Maintenance and Safety & Security
- Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment, including first aid kits, eyewash stations, safety showers, and fire extinguishers
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Department Chair
- A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related field is required
- Experience in laboratory setup and a foundational understanding of safety protocols in scientific laboratories
- Candidates should be detail-oriented, capable of working independently as well as collaboratively, possess strong problem-solving abilities, and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
- Basic proficiency in computer applications
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
- Commitment to supporting the values of the university
- A Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field
- A minimum of two years of experience in coordinating science laboratories within higher education
- Knowledge of safe practices for chemical use and disposal
- Familiarity with OSHA and EPA regulations relevant to laboratory environments
This role involves both office and laboratory settings, with daily exposure to chemicals utilized in undergraduate chemistry labs. The position requires significant physical activity, including prolonged periods of standing, walking, kneeling, and bending, with the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
