The Surgical Technologist Medical Assistant III plays a crucial role in delivering patient care and supporting procedure suite operations under the guidance of a physician and/or registered nurse (RN). This position encompasses a variety of patient care, technical, and administrative responsibilities to assist healthcare practitioners and ensure high-quality patient experiences throughout the healthcare system.

Responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities outlined in the Medical Assistant III job description, the Surgical Technologist will also:

  • Plan, organize, and perform duties as a surgical technologist, including gathering necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies for procedures.
  • Assist in preparing equipment to establish a sterile field and uphold sterile techniques during procedures.
  • Continuously monitor and anticipate any special issues, equipment, or supply needs throughout the procedure.
  • Prepare patients for procedures and assist with their transport as needed.
  • Help position patients and ensure proper draping during procedures.
  • Document and count supplies utilized during procedures.
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and efficient work environment.
  • Assist in the preparation, handling, and disposal of specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Participate in cleaning and restocking duties, and notify facilities if equipment requires repair.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe environment by adhering to aseptic techniques and assisting with cleaning procedural areas.

Fiscal Responsibilities:

  • Prepare billing slips for patient charges.
  • Ensure accurate charging of equipment and supplies.
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for enhancing the efficiency of patient care delivery.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Completion of a medical assistant program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP); or equivalent military training or experience.
  • Two years of experience assisting clinical staff in an acute care surgical environment or ambulatory surgery/endoscopy center, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant in the State of Washington, with knowledge of state conduct and standards of practice.
  • Registration as a Surgical Technologist in the State of Washington, with application submission required within the first 30 days of hire.
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent) with renewal every two years.
  • Participation in process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies or disasters according to clinic protocols.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Demonstrated initiative through the advancement of technical skills and knowledge sharing.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service abilities.
  • Proficiency in computer skills to support operational needs.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and solve problems in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Preferred:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology program and certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
