Overview of Responsibilities


The Library Support Specialist is responsible for providing essential administrative assistance within the library environment. This role includes preparing materials for circulation, assisting library users, maintaining accurate records, and performing related tasks as assigned.

The position operates under the guidance of the Library Branch Manager.

Key Responsibilities


- Manage circulation tasks, including checking materials in and out using an automated system, processing and cataloging new items, and ensuring proper shelving and organization of materials.

- Provide support to library patrons with computer usage, answer inquiries, and help locate books and other resources.


- Communicate with patrons regarding overdue materials, prepare and send overdue notices, and manage accounts with outstanding items, including calculating and collecting overdue fees.


- Handle new book orders by verifying invoices against order forms, entering data into the system, and preparing necessary labels and covers for new materials.


- Answer phone calls, direct inquiries to appropriate staff, renew materials, place holds on requested items, and assist with troubleshooting library equipment.

- Register new library users, update patron information, and issue library cards.


- Conduct reading sessions for various groups as scheduled, and assist with family and children’s activities and special projects as needed.

- Create and distribute marketing materials, flyers, and newsletters, and maintain bulletin boards.


- Plan and execute various library programs, including organizing volunteers and managing donations.

- Foster a culture of exceptional customer service within the library.



Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


- Familiarity with basic library operations, circulation processes, and office management techniques.

- Interest in literature and understanding of reader engagement.


- Proficiency in using library resources and equipment, along with standard office technology.

- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.


- Strong interpersonal skills to interact courteously with the public and maintain effective relationships with patrons and colleagues.


Education and Experience


- High school diploma or GED with some experience in a library or public service environment, or a combination of education and experience that meets the requirements.


Physical Demands

This position may require occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds, regular communication, and the use of hands for various tasks. It may also involve standing, walking, and reaching. The work environment is typically moderately noisy, similar to a business office setting.

Additional Requirements

- A favorable background check as determined by local, state, and federal records.

- A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
