Residential Loan Underwriter

First Central Savings Bank is in search of a dedicated Residential Loan Underwriter for a full-time role within our expanding organization. Our institution offers a diverse range of loan products, including conforming, non-conforming, agency, and government-backed loans. We are looking for a seasoned Underwriter to manage our loan volume and support the ongoing growth of the bank. This position presents a significant opportunity for career advancement for the right candidate.

The Underwriter will focus on the underwriting of residential loans, both conventional and non-QM, adhering to investor guidelines. This includes evaluating and analyzing loan applications and supporting documentation to determine the borrower's creditworthiness for approval and subsequent sale in the secondary market. Responsibilities include reviewing and auditing loan files for completeness and accuracy, as well as analyzing credit documents, mortgage applications, credit reports, income statements, title reports, appraisals, compliance documents, and other necessary documentation to facilitate credit decisions through automated or manual underwriting systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that real estate loan applications are completed with all required documents submitted accurately and that loan files comply with the latest investor guidelines and industry standards.
  • Conduct mortgage credit analysis, with or without automated underwriting assistance, to assess the borrower's capacity and willingness to repay the mortgage.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of secondary market activities and industry practices as they relate to underwriting quality and origination processes.
  • Stay informed about current mortgage and compliance laws and regulations, including FHLMC, FNMA, FHA, RESPA, Reg Z, Reg B, ECOA, HMDA, and Fair Lending.
  • Evaluate and document credit risk for proposed loans and provide recommendations accordingly.
  • Manage the underwriting approval process, ensuring adherence to credit quality and compliance standards.
  • Review and analyze third-party reports to confirm compliance with relevant requirements.
  • Maintain the integrity of the loan origination system data.
  • Assist the Closing Department with any additional documentation or clarification required by investors.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of recent mortgage underwriting experience with a solid understanding of DU/LP/DE validations.
  • Experience with Non-QM or DSCR loan products is preferred.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution is required.
  • Ability to recommend approval or denial of credit applications and provide comprehensive documentation to support lending decisions.
  • Thorough knowledge of conventional underwriting guidelines, including both Conforming and Jumbo loans.
  • Proficient in analyzing loan and borrower data to determine the best course of action.
  • Capability to review self-employed, corporate, profit and loss statements, and financial documents to ascertain borrower income.
  • Ability to evaluate complex income tax returns to establish qualifying income.
  • Experience underwriting FNMA & FHLMC Conventional, Jumbo, and FHA loan types.
  • Self-motivated with a strong production record; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex issues.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with loan processors and support staff.
  • Familiarity with Encompass is a plus.

This role is integral to the success of our Mortgage Banking Department and offers a competitive salary based on qualifications, skills, certifications, and experience, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
