Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to join our team at Carle Health. As an Echocardiography Specialist, you will be responsible for performing high-quality ultrasound studies of the heart and great vessels, identifying EKG abnormalities, and utilizing knowledge of age-specific patient needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform high-quality two-dimensional ultrasound studies of the heart and great vessels
  • Identify EKG abnormalities and utilize knowledge of age-specific patient needs
  • Utilize knowledge of complimenting imaging and/or doppler techniques
  • Recognize abnormalities in structure and function, distinguish normal from abnormal findings, and recognize imaging artifacts
  • Knowledge of gross and sectional anatomy
  • Estimate the severity of valvular insufficiencies by mapping dimensions, orientation, and directions of the regurgitant jet with color flow doppler
  • Assess blood flow through the heart, including increased velocities, stenosis, regurgitations, and shunts with pulsed and continuous-wave doppler
  • Use contrast echocardiography in cases where two-dimensional and color flow are suboptimal
  • Evaluate left and right ventricular systolic and diastolic functions and document wall motion abnormalities
  • Recognize rare, common, simple, and complex congenital heart malformations, acquired pathologies, possible outcomes of palliative and corrective surgical procedures
  • Complete studies according to updated protocols, recognize needs, and present additional views, calculations, and measurements when necessary
  • Use segmental approach while obtaining images of cardiac structures in four echocardiographic windows: parasternal, apical, subcostal, and suprasternal notch regions
  • Operate ultrasound equipment, including knowledge of key controls to expedite studies and produce interpretable images
  • Select transducers best suited to structures of interest for optimal resolution and adequate penetration
  • Obtain, review, and document pertinent patient history, physical examination, and supporting clinical data to facilitate diagnostic results
  • Correlate clinical history with exam to be performed and consult with cardiologist for clarification
  • Monitor, record, charge, and communicate appropriately utilizing computerized documentation system
  • Prepare, instruct, assist patients, and produce images in a timely manner for dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiograms
  • Assist cardiologist in performing transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE)
  • Communicate results to cardiologist and respond to possible questions and concerns in a timely manner
  • Maintain monthly correlation studies and monthly statistics
  • Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot and report equipment failure
  • Participate in mobile echo/vascular service regionally
  • Participate in callback rotation
  • Assist in performing functional, pharmacological cardiolite, and echocardiography stress testing
  • Document procedures correctly
  • Accurately assess patients and their physical ability to perform tests
  • Accurately interpret and clarify physician's orders
  • Provide thorough assessments of patients in crisis situations and notify physicians when necessary
  • Display proficiency in knowing lethal arrhythmias
  • Complete quarterly competency in stress lab, holter monitoring, and event monitoring
  • Use time, supplies, and other resources productively to promote responsive and cost-effective care
  • Complete work within assigned shift
  • Use overtime only when necessary
  • Organize and prioritize work regardless of frequent interruptions
  • Use slow time to work on additional tasks

Requirements:

  • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) Certified with AHA recognized allied health certifying body within 1 year
  • Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) n Echocardiography certification
  • Successful completion of certification testing within 1 year of employment
  • Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser
  • Works proficiently with computers and software-driven testing machines and digital archive system
