POSITION OVERVIEW

This role requires a comprehensive level of technical expertise and the application of that expertise to laboratory testing, clinical significance, and advanced problem-solving capabilities.

This position acts as a departmental resource, ensuring compliance with all relevant laboratory accrediting bodies and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA '88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA).


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Executes all responsibilities of MLS/MT roles as outlined by the department, demonstrating a high level of proficiency. Oversees operational leadership and workflow management for the section/shift. Integrates extensive technical knowledge and clinical significance into daily departmental activities. Responsible for resolving complex technical, computer, interdepartmental, and quality-related issues. Under the guidance of the Supervisor and/or Technical Director, implements system technical initiatives within their area of responsibility. Provides on-site supervision (determining schedules, managing daily workflow, and contributing to assessments or disciplinary actions) in the absence of the section supervisor.
  • Prioritizes quality by reviewing documentation and ensuring adherence to all quality control and assurance protocols. Maintains quality control and instrumentation maintenance records, ensuring documentation meets the standards set by accrediting and licensing organizations. Collaborates with the Supervisor, Administrative and Technical Directors, and Technical Specialist in executing new QC/QA policies and continuous quality improvement initiatives in line with the Quality System. Actively engages in department and LSA/SQL System quality assurance activities. Monitors and ensures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements for the laboratory. Participates in preparations for on-site accreditation processes.
  • Identifies opportunities for enhancement and participates in initiatives to improve the financial performance of the department and the LSA/SQL System, aiming to reduce costs, boost productivity, and enhance service quality. Oversees inventory management and promptly addresses related issues. Assists with cost analysis models.
  • Supports basic personnel management, including involvement in selection, training, development, and coaching under the direction of the Supervisor or appropriate Director. Aids in new employee orientation, training, and competency assessments. Provides input for competency and annual evaluations for employees within appropriate timelines. Actively participates in implementing and ensuring staff completion of competency program requirements. Self-motivated and proactive in seeking opportunities to contribute to departmental projects. Coordinates and engages in at least two special projects annually within the department or LSA/SQL System, alongside other miscellaneous departmental responsibilities.
  • Acts as a communication liaison for on-site and System matters. Facilitates access to other System resources when necessary. Collaborates closely with on-site management to integrate the area into broader activities. Engages with colleagues with an emphasis on teamwork and a commitment to customer service. Demonstrates mentorship and coaching abilities, fostering a constructive environment that encourages learning and professional growth. Exhibits effective verbal and written communication skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
  • Two (2) years of experience in nonwaived testing within the designated specialty/sub-specialty area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • MLS or Specialty Certification.
