We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Special Education Assistant to join our team at KIPP SoCal Public Schools. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting students with disabilities in our Expanded Learning Program.
Key Responsibilities- Direct Service: Provide academic assistance, intervention support, and recreational programming to students with disabilities.
- Develop, create, and implement academic, recreational, and enrichment activities for students with disabilities.
- Supervise assigned students to ensure their safety and the program's effectiveness.
- Provide support to students with disabilities during Expanded Learning Program hours.
- Implement comprehensive positive behavioral support plans and effective behavior management strategies.
- Deliver instruction and participate as a member of the educational team.
- Uphold and enforce school rules and policies.
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials to provide access to class activities.
- Supervise students throughout the Expanded Learning Program in classrooms, during educational activities, and during meal times.
- Assist Expanded Learning Instructors in classroom instruction and behavior support.
- Implement behavior support plans and strategies during Expanded Learning Program hours.
- Assist in managing student behavior and crisis intervention, including restraint.
- Work with students having special needs and/or aggressive behaviors.
- Assist with medical needs of assigned students.
- Model appropriate behavioral interventions.
- Maintain accurate documentation, records, and reports.
- Participate in developing data collection systems and monitoring data collection.
- Maintain confidentiality of students and families as mandated by district, state, and federal regulations.
- Participate in school and regional trainings, in-services, and meetings.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and parents.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- High School diploma (KIPP assessment required prior to interview).
- AA degree or at least two years of coursework at a four-year college preferred.
- 1-year experience working with students with special needs in a school setting.
- Experience working in an educational setting implementing behavioral intervention for students with complex and/or severe behavioral problems.
- Certification in NCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention), desired.
- First aid and CPR, desired.
- Knowledge of positive behavioral interventions and applied behavior analysis (ABA).
- Knowledge of behavioral management strategies and techniques related to pupils with special needs.
- Prior experience working with groups of elementary or middle school students in an academic or recreational setting strongly preferred.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
- Ability to work effectively with teachers, parents, and students.
