Phlebotomy Specialist

Serves patients by collecting and transporting specimens from an off-site facility for laboratory testing.
Key Responsibilities- Draws blood from patients or donors in Nursing Home facility for analysis or other medical purposes:
- Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
- Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
- May prick finger to draw blood.
- Follows laboratory procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Adheres to laboratory quality control policies; documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Follows established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
- Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests; recording results; reporting results to unit nurse-manager.
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
- Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and JCAHO standards.Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR).
- Interpersonal skills and compassion.
- Analyzing information, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills.
- Must be able to lift, move, or carry certain equipment.
- Ability to move or support patients.
- Must be able to bend and squat.
- Prolonged walking and standing.
- Ability at times to tolerate high levels of stress.
- Ability to get along with fellow employees on the basis of fair and impartial treatment.
