The Clinical Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by managing the acquisition, collection, reception, documentation, and processing of patient specimens. This position ensures the precision of specimen collection and labeling, processes samples appropriately, and directs them to the relevant laboratory section, all while adhering to applicable laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Welcomes patients and their families with professionalism and courtesy.
- Informs patients and family members about the procedures to be conducted.
- Conducts accurate patient identification to ensure proper labeling, collection, and processing of laboratory specimens.
- Executes all specimen collection methods (venipuncture, fingerstick) with precision, following all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Labels all patient specimens and barcode order requisitions with initials, time of collection, and verifies orders in the laboratory's computer system upon arrival.
- Communicates test results and pathology reports to nursing staff and physician offices, escalating any issues to the Supervisor.
- Manages the mailing and faxing of laboratory reports to physician offices as needed.
- Maintains organized filing of laboratory reports, ensuring they are current and accessible.
- Requests courier services for specimen transport as necessary.
- Conducts weekly quality control checks of laboratory eyewash stations as assigned.
- Follows all safety protocols, including standard precautions and infection control policies.
- Demonstrates efficiency and organization during high workload periods to expedite patient results.
- Receives specimens for testing, verifies label accuracy, and determines specimen quality and sufficiency.
- Enters data into the computer system regarding collection times, procedures, and patient identity.
- Completes patient registrations and enters orders as required.
- Notifies supervisors of any damaged or contaminated specimens and arranges for alternative testing as appropriate.
- Prioritizes and transports specimens promptly to the respective laboratory sections.
- Interacts with medical personnel to address routine inquiries and clarify information.
- Maintains a safe and orderly work environment, adhering to all safety and regulatory procedures.
- Performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Greets all visitors to the laboratory professionally, showcasing excellent customer service skills.
- Responds to inquiries from hospital or medical personnel, directing non-routine questions to the appropriate supervisor.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems.
- Identifies personal learning needs and takes initiative to address them.
- Participates in required training programs and completes all mandatory certifications and licensure within the designated timeframe.
Education: High School Diploma or GED required, along with completion of Phlebotomy coursework.
Experience: Previous experience in a high-volume outpatient laboratory or inpatient setting is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: Certification in Phlebotomy is preferred, along with certification as a Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehending English. Moderate computer skills for data entry and specimen verification, with familiarity in computerized laboratory information systems and HIPAA policies on confidentiality.
