Operating Room Nurse

The Operating Room Nurse is a vital member of our surgical team, responsible for providing high-quality patient care and ensuring a safe and efficient operating room environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assess patients' understanding of their disease process and need for surgical intervention.
- Provide perioperative teaching to patients and their families.
- Manage patient care activities in the operating room, maintaining a high standard of safety for patients and staff.
- Prepare the operating room, ensuring availability of necessary supplies and equipment.
- Administer medications safely and effectively.
- Position patients appropriately for surgical intervention, using positioning aids as needed.
- Perform surgical prep according to standard of care and surgeon preference.
- Handle and document specimens according to policy.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in caring for latex-sensitive patients.
- Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to protocol.
- Initiate corrective action when surgical counts are incorrect.
- Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times.
- Keep the surgical suite clean, tidy, and properly stocked.
- Use principles of asepsis in various situations.
- Initiate corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
- Wear appropriate attire in restricted areas.
- Adhere to recommended traffic patterns.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe use and handling of equipment.
- Capable of troubleshooting equipment problems.
- Verbalize knowledge of risks and complications.
- Report malfunctioning equipment to appropriate personnel.
- Demonstrate awareness of protocol for malfunctioning equipment and repair.
- Provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
- Anticipate the need for equipment and supplies based on surgeon preference.
- Select equipment and supplies in an organized, cost-effective, and timely manner.
- Assure all equipment is functioning before use and remove any malfunctioning equipment.
- Demonstrate skills in the appropriate use of instruments and equipment.
- Operate mechanical, electrical, and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Use knowledge of medical record policy and procedures.
- Participate in medical records QAPI.
- Listen carefully, give feedback directly, honestly, and talk with others to clarify differences.
- Utilize translation services when needed.
- Utilize appropriate services when needed to communicate with employees and patients with speech and hearing disorders.
- Effectively communicate and interact with patients, their families, and other external and internal clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrate a willingness to look at new ideas and work in a changing environment.
- Understand, verbalize, and participate in the quality improvement process.
- Support initiatives designed to improve individual and organizational performance.
- Provide appropriate patient care across the age span.
- Identify and report suspected child, spousal/partner, and elder abuse per protocol.
- Current California RN license and BLS, and ACLS required.
- 2-5 years of experience as an operating room nurse required.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards.
- Interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
- Working knowledge of telephone, fax, and patient monitoring equipment.
- Standard operating room machinery, equipment, autoclaves, washer sterilizer, and patient monitors.
This is a per diem or part-time position available at Orthopaedic Hospital.
