Job Summary
The Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University is seeking a Journalism Apprentice for the Next Generation Newsroom. This is a fully on-campus position that requires a journalist with one to three years of professional experience who has a demonstrated passion for daily reporting and local news.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and generate thoughtful, accurate, and timely stories tied to the news cycle daily.
- Pitch timely stories to the deputy editor and teaching editor.
- Produce crisp, engaging, error-free copy that meets newsroom standards and guidelines.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout the region for assignments, as needed.
- Team-minded approach to reporting that encourages and supports others, including mentoring student journalists.
Qualifications
- Minimum of one-year post-undergraduate professional experience employed as a reporter in a newsroom, preferably covering government, education, or a combination of both.
- A minimum of five written clips published by a news outlet, including student media, demonstrating a depth and range of reporting.
- Demonstrated self-starter who recognizes news as it happens.
- Ability to quickly locate primary sources to report out stories on deadline.
- Experience cultivating sources in a new beat area.
- Creativity and sound judgment.
- Willingness to work outside of regular business hours.
- Multi-media experience creating videos and photographs, podcasting, producing and appearing on-camera.
- Knowledge of the region's political, social, and economic landscape preferred.
