General Overview

This full-time hourly role reports directly to the Fleet Maintenance Manager.

The incumbent will execute proficient tasks in the upkeep of various vehicles including cars, trucks, heavy-duty vehicles (such as backhoes, excavators, compactors, bulldozers, motor graders, etc.), lawn mowers, pumps, emergency response vehicles, small gas engines, and other related machinery.


Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receives service requests and evaluates repair needs in line with established automotive practices.
  • Under guidance, conducts repairs on drive lines, engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, and both diesel and gasoline engines for various vehicles.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks such as lubrication, oil changes, and service inspections.
  • Handles tire changes and repairs.
  • Installs and assists in the installation of specialized automotive equipment.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization within the workshop.
  • May be called upon to assist with emergency operations during critical situations.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with current methods for maintaining automobiles, trucks, and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Understanding of the operational principles and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Proficiency in utilizing a range of standard hand tools, machinery, and power equipment.
  • Experience with electrical and acetylene welding tools.
  • Capability to operate vehicles relevant to service requests.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, overtime, and on-call duties.
  • Commitment to participate in required job training sessions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in automotive mechanical maintenance; completion of a vocational technical automotive repair program may be considered in lieu of experience.
(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be accepted in place of the stated minimum requirements.)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Florida Commercial Driver's License.
  • Required to provide personal hand tools necessary for typical repairs in the trade.
  • Must hold ASE certification as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Acceptable vision (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Capability to lift and carry heavy items (over 45 lbs.).
  • Ability to perform tasks involving reaching, pulling, walking, standing on concrete surfaces, kneeling, bending, stooping, and climbing into and under machinery.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a shop environment.
  • Exposure to grease and oils.
  • Potential for slippery surfaces.
  • Work may involve moving objects or vehicles.

ANNUAL LEAVE - Full-time employees working a 37.50 hour week will earn between 90 to 150 hours of leave, based on classification and tenure. Employees on a 40-hour work week will earn between 96 to 160 hours, depending on classification and tenure.

Leave accruals may vary for bargaining unit employees.

SICK LEAVE - All regular full-time employees will accrue sick leave at a rate of 13 days per year. Part-time employees will accrue sick leave on a pro-rata basis.
