Job Summary

As an Academic Advisor at Broward College, you will play a vital role in supporting students in achieving their academic and career goals. This is a full-time, regular position that requires a Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Education, and four years of relevant experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide academic and career advising to students using a case management approach, including in-depth intake interviews, short and long-term goal development, and follow-up and outreach to students requiring additional support.
  • Collaborate with administrators, faculty, and staff in assigned pathways to support student success, resolving student issues and problems relating to advising such as curriculum and course prerequisites.
  • Review transcripts to ensure eligibility for admission to a specific college or program, including unofficial evaluation of transfer credits and applicability of academic credit to program requirements.
  • Monitor and communicate with students in their assigned caseload for academic progress, success, retention, early alert referrals, and to ensure deadlines are met for completing various coursework requirements, graduation, and other specific program requirements.
  • Assist with training and/or assisting new advisors with regard to college policy and regulations applicable to program requirements.
  • Conduct/facilitate career and group advising sessions for students in their assigned caseload as applicable.
  • Identify and deliver strategies for students to enhance the student experience and contribute to improved retention and graduation rates for Broward College students, collaborating with all areas of Broward College to support a positive, engaged student experience.
  • Facilitate students through the career exploration process using a variety of career assessment tools and facilitate the development of academic plans based on students' educational and career goals using applicable technology.
  • Serve on college and campus committees, task forces, working groups, and may serve as a Club advisor to a student organization club, serving as a liaison to a campus academic department and assigned pathway.
  • Respond to email/telephone inquiries from students, staff, faculty, and administrators related to advising, registration, graduation, transfer information, and other BC policies and procedures.
  • Process electronic transient forms through the system, reviewing student academic history to determine qualification for enrollment in requested transient coursework in accordance with current BC policies.

Requirements
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Education.
  • Four years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to perform complex administrative analysis with only general supervision.
  • Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent coordination and communication skills used appropriately to influence the decision-making of individuals and groups at all levels in the College.
  • Ability to plan and manage own work flow, priorities, and results accomplishment.
  • Requires the ability to present and disseminate data to various levels.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of computerized systems and operating environments, including Microsoft Office Products and specialized computer systems.
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with a diverse employee and student population.
