The Lead Polymer Research Scientist, reporting to the Director of R&D, is anticipated to be a pivotal contributor, providing technical guidance for significant initiatives aimed at developing PVC decking with high levels (>60%) of recycled PVC resin in the formulations. This individual will spearhead the formulation and processing technologies necessary to meet our objectives of enhancing recycled content while delivering top-tier products to our target markets.
NOTE: This position offers flexibility in location.
- Enhance our knowledge and application of PVC products and formulations that incorporate over 60% recycled PVC resin, collaborating closely with Return Polymers to characterize and specify recycled PVC blends.
- Tackle diverse challenges, including product/process development, improvement, field issue resolution, manufacturing efficiencies, and outsourcing support.
- Provide technical leadership for 1 to 2 major projects that significantly influence sales or process efficiency, while simultaneously managing several smaller projects.
- Expected to introduce innovative design advancements for product and process development.
- Required to present technical direction for major projects and programs that impact key product areas and technological advancements.
- Network internally and externally to gather information for projects and identify future opportunities.
- Possess knowledge of the industry segment for a single product, including key drivers and competitive technologies.
- Develop Functional and Functional Unit Specifications (FFUs) and translate them into product specifications, demonstrating proficiency in the company's scale-up process from experimentation to commercialization.
- Create project timelines that incorporate key tactical items for other functional areas.
- Required to present program and project proposals with justifications to R&D and senior management.
- Integrate Lean/Six Sigma methodologies and continuous improvement practices in all projects.
- Collaborate with external suppliers and partners to ensure timely project completion.
Education: PhD with 0 to 5 years of relevant experience, a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with an MS, or 10 years of relevant experience with a BS. Degrees in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering are strongly preferred. Lean Six Sigma experience is desirable.
Other desired skills:
- Extensive direct experience with formulation and extrusion of polymer systems for exterior applications, preferably in building products.
- Demonstrated experience with the formulation of systems that include process aids, weathering packages, and colorant systems.
- Working knowledge of outdoor and accelerated weathering test methods, product requirements, and equipment.
- Familiarity with US and International Building Code requirements, particularly for exterior residential building products, is preferred.
- A publication record demonstrating competence in public speaking, contributions to technical literature, and intellectual property protection through patents and patent applications.
- Strong background in manufacturing systems, data collection, and statistical analysis.
- Proven success in collaborating with internal (manufacturing, engineering, quality) and external (contractors, vendors) stakeholders.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and technologies.
Engineering Cost Savings, Analytical Skills, Lean Six Sigma, Quality Management Systems, New Product Development Management systems including Stage-Gate, Agile, DFSS, Manufacturing Systems, Production Processes, Extrusion, Problem Solving, Manufacturing Operations.
Candidates should be data-driven decision-makers.
Candidate soft skills: strong multitasking abilities, experience working effectively with vendors and contractors, analytical mindset, diligent follow-up, and a strong safety orientation. Ability to collaborate with all levels of operational staff.
