Food Safety & Quality Assurance Technician

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Assist in maintaining operational quality by collecting and analyzing data, documenting food safety and quality activities, and ensuring compliance with company, customer, regulatory, and BRC standards.
  • Uphold a safe and organized work environment.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) in production and warehouse areas, documenting compliance.
  • Conduct calibrations and project assignments for Test & Measuring Equipment (scales, thermometers, moisture analyzers, etc.) promptly and professionally, reporting findings to the FSQA Supervisor.
  • Perform inspections of incoming raw materials, verifying and filing Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and other receiving documents in accordance with quality control protocols.
  • Evaluate finished products and processing parameters to ensure alignment with customer specifications and manufacturing guidelines, generating COAs as necessary.
  • Carry out finished product label verifications.
  • Inform production staff of any product quality deviations and place products on hold when required.
  • Execute pre-operational inspections and collect microbiological swab samples for environmental monitoring, including air, water, drains, and equipment surfaces.
  • Verify daily Preventive Control Points and ensure food safety checks are conducted.
  • Coordinate and perform weekly pizza bake-offs and conduct texture analyses as needed, collecting and entering data for trend analysis.
  • Maintain accurate records of tests, inspection results, and observations.
  • Keep precise records of QA hold products, retention samples, foreign material incidents, non-conforming products, and customer complaints.
  • Alert FSQA Manager, Coordinator/Supervisor, and Plant Manager of any unusual product observations to address potential quality issues before product release.
  • Assist in onboarding and training new staff members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include:
    • Organizing daily record packets for Operations and FSQ teams.
    • Creating FSQ Talking Points/Operational Procedure Lists for shift meetings.
    • Engaging in various improvement projects such as developing SOP binders and Pack Room Quality OPL.
    • Managing record maintenance and follow-up of third-party lab results.
    • Leading FSRA/GMP audits during shifts.

Work Schedule:

  • Plant operates 24/7.
  • Availability to work up to 48 hours weekly, including Sundays through Saturdays.
  • 12-hour shifts:
    • AM Shift: 6am – 6:30pm
    • PM Shift: 6pm – 6:30am
  • Assigned to a crew with a rotating schedule of 4 days on and 4 days off.
  • Work 4 consecutive weeks of 48 hours followed by 4 weeks of 36 hours, repeating this cycle.
  • Average pay equates to 42 to 44 hours of regular pay weekly over an 8-week cycle.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English are essential.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in food manufacturing.
  • Preferred 1 year of experience in Quality Assurance.
  • Strong communication skills with all levels of staff and management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and other computer applications.
  • Familiarity with label printers and measuring devices.
  • A scientific understanding of food safety and quality principles.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Capability to perform physical tasks for extended periods, including standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting.
  • Ability to work at heights using stairs, ladders, or personnel lifts.
  • Willingness to wear protective gear such as safety shoes, masks, glasses, hard hats, hair/beard nets, and gloves as required.
  • Comfort working around high-speed industrial machinery.
  • Ability to handle allergens present in a food production environment.
  • Capacity to work in cold conditions.

Safety & PPE Guidelines:

  • Required Personal Protective Equipment includes hair nets, ear plugs, steel-toe slip-resistant footwear, freezer suits, and warm gloves. Chemical-resistant gloves and goggles are necessary during sanitation tasks.
