Job Summary

The Attending Physician VIII Infectious Disease Specialist provides subspecialty-level consultative and direct care to a wide array of adult patients with complex medical problems confirmed or suspected to be caused or complicated by infections. This role further enhances the educational mission of Cook County Health by directly teaching physicians in training and through continuous scholarship and regular participation in hospital-based, regional, and national conferences. The successful candidate will actively participate in systematic efforts to improve patient care and medical training through administrative leadership and active participation in multidisciplinary quality improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides ID consultative care throughout Cermak Health Services to complex surgical, obstetric, and medical patients by regularly staffing custody-based ID consult services according to the service schedule established by the Chair of the Department of Correctional, Medical Director Cermak (Department Chair).
  • Provides direct primary care to adult inpatients with confirmed or suspected human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and/or other complex infectious diseases by regularly staffing the Cermak Health Services HIV/ID service according to the service schedule established by the Department Chair.
  • Provides direct ambulatory primary care to HIV-infected adult patients at the Cook County Jail receiving, primary care and urgent care clinical areas during regular business and off hours as assigned Department Chair.
  • Provides subspecialty-level ambulatory care for patients with sexually transmitted infections, chronic viral hepatitis, and/or other non-HIV related infection diseases according to the service schedule established by the Department Chair.
  • Upholds all extant internal and external requirements for documenting patient-care activities, following infection control and medication utilization practices, interacting with consultant medical and allied healthcare providers, and ensuring timely and appropriate follow-up care for each of the inpatient and outpatient care activities described above.
  • Provides direct clinical supervision and adheres to internal and external regulatory requirements related to the performance and evaluation of assigned staff working in the ambulatory and inpatient settings.
  • Attends patient care activities described above to provide direct clinical supervision of medical students, residents, and ID fellows assigned to these services, including conducting didactic teaching sessions; observing and providing informal and formal structured evaluations of trainee performance; completing and discussing structured performance evaluations with trainees in a timely fashion; and case presentations and/or discussions during regularly scheduled case conferences.
  • Conducts regular teaching conferences for medical students, medical residents, and/or ID fellows on ID topics as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Attends and participates regularly in divisional and departmental administrative meetings.
  • Participates in or leads the Cermak Infection Control Department, Anti-Infective, Cermak Research, or other correctional health quality improvement activities or committees as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Contributes to the design, performance, analysis, and presentation of ID-related research regularly, including applications for intramural and extramural grant funding and for approval by applicable institutional review boards.
  • Liaisons with Cook County Health, local, regional, and national public health agencies.
  • Maintains Infection Control and Infectious Disease statistical data as clinically relevant and as assigned by the Department Chair.
Requirements
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical college or university.
  • Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment.
  • Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment.
  • Successful completion of a residency program in Internal medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Successful completion of a Fellowship Program in Infectious Diseases accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • Board Certification or Board Eligible in Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and must obtain Board Certification within one (1) year of starting employment.
  • Must be able to travel to Cook County Health work sites.

  • Bilingual.

  • Knowledge to diagnose medical or surgical problems and to prescribe treatment for conditions arising within the field of specialization.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standard of care.
  • Proficient in using standard word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and statistical software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with patients, trainees, colleagues, and other healthcare workers from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and manage CCH policies and procedures in ID.
  • Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices incorporating the use of electronic health record (EHR).

  • This position requires the ability to bend, lift, and push moderately to heavy objects and stand, stoop, bend, and reach for extended periods of time.
