Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Employment Specialist to join our team at the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin. As an Employment Specialist, you will play a critical role in building relationships with employers and other agencies to develop jobs for consumers and help consumers retain these jobs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Job Development
    • Establish and maintain relationships with local community agencies and schools to build employment services
    • Act as a liaison for our organization's DVR line of business, attending relevant fairs and promotional opportunities
    • Assist in the implementation of new projects, such as mentorship sites
    • Provide necessary information for funder and grant reports
  • Client Coordination
    • Work with DVR counselors to implement employment plans for consumers
    • Complete initial consultations, intakes, and career profiles for new DVR consumers
    • Manage wait lists and maintain accurate records in our Client Management System
    • Assign and schedule consumers to staff members with appropriate training
    • Participate in team meetings involving consumers and their team members
    • Oversee the transition of consumers to long-term support, if applicable
    • Serve as the primary liaison for parents and guardians
  • Job Coaching
    • Model appropriate work maturity skills and hold consumers to high expectations
    • Monitor consumer work performance and provide feedback and prompts as needed
    • Maintain positive professional relationships with consumers, guardians, and employers
    • Promote natural supports and provide training to consumers' coworkers on the job
    • Research and create necessary curriculum and accommodations for employment skills, including time management, employer relations, and communication
    • Communicate with employers, guardians, and consumers during the fading process
    • Attend required meetings and in-service training sessions
    • Complete job coaching progress notes and required documentation
Requirements

    • Be willing to adapt to changing schedules and priorities
    • Able to cope with emergency situations or behavioral challenges in a calm and effective manner
    • Able to work collaboratively with supervisors and team members
    • Effective communication skills with consumers and employers
    • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
    • 1-3 years of experience working with consumers utilizing DVR services, preferred but not required
    • Valid driver's license and insured vehicle
    • Pass a background check meeting State of Wisconsin requirements
