Duties Summary

As a Junior Accountant, you will engage in professional accounting activities within designated segments of a broader financial program or for a smaller department, adhering to established accounting standards and guidelines. Your role will encompass a variety of related responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain financial records, including ledgers, journals, and registers necessary for fiscal operations.
  • Assist in the collection, organization, classification, and reporting of financial data.
  • Accurately classify, code, and post accounting documents related to expenditures and revenues.
  • Manage payroll processes for the department and prepare relevant labor reports.
  • Handle personnel documentation and transactions, including changes in positions and benefits, while providing guidance on relevant laws and regulations.
  • Act as a liaison for employee benefits, ensuring proper communication and processing of enrollment forms.
  • Maintain records for federal-aid program reimbursements.
  • Prepare trial balances and make necessary adjustments and closing entries.
  • Analyze financial data and generate financial statements and reports.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and participate in budget discussions.
  • Conduct financial studies and provide recommendations based on findings.
  • Assist in estimating departmental revenues and operating costs.
  • May oversee junior staff involved in fiscal record-keeping and provide training as needed.
  • May be required to operate a vehicle for work-related tasks.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience:

A combination of education and experience equivalent to:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, including
  • At least twelve (12) semester credit hours in accounting or auditing courses, and
  • One (1) year of professional experience in accounting or auditing, involving the maintenance or examination of financial records and the preparation and analysis of financial statements.
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Driver License (Class 3) or a comparable driver's license at the time of application.
Knowledge and Skills:

Understanding of accounting principles and practices, financial statement preparation, report writing, and office procedures.

Ability to: Generate accurate reports, analyze data for discrepancies, and maintain effective working relationships.
