The Patient Care Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the Registered Nurse by enhancing the patient experience through collaboration with the healthcare team. The primary responsibilities include assisting patients with daily living activities and comfort measures, ensuring a positive and supportive environment.

The role may involve performing basic patient care tasks such as assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility support, and monitoring vital signs. Additionally, advanced training may be required for specific tasks such as phlebotomy, simple treatments, and other clinical skills based on unit needs. Clerical duties including data retrieval, maintaining supplies, and transporting medications may also be part of the role. The Patient Care Assistant must thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating effective communication and organizational skills while working under the guidance of various healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Delivering an exceptional patient experience by collaborating with the healthcare team, patients, and their families.

Patient-Centered Care: Create a healing environment by addressing patient needs and adhering to the care plan as directed by licensed professionals. Engage patients and families in their care to ensure compliance with treatment plans. Implement safety interventions consistently to minimize risks and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Uphold patient rights and dignity.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in hourly patient rounds.
  • Respond promptly to calls and inquiries, ensuring appropriate follow-up.
  • Address patient concerns or escalate to the charge nurse when necessary.
  • Offer assistance and comfort measures proactively.
  • Present oneself in a professional manner, demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Provide patient care under the supervision of the RN.
  • Assist with personal care needs (e.g., hygiene, nutrition, comfort) and perform advanced skills as required by the unit.
  • Support the RN and healthcare team in care delivery as assigned.
  • Monitor and document key patient safety information.
  • Participate in unit performance improvement initiatives.
  • Transport supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with all team members, patients, and families.
  • Maintain and operate patient care equipment, reporting any issues promptly.
  • Update patient information boards and documentation as necessary.
Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Completion of a state-approved program for Certified Nursing Assistants or Patient Care Technicians is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Certification as a Nursing Assistant is preferred.

Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire.

Essential Skills

Ability to follow detailed instructions.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Must be at least 16 years of age.
