Position Summary:


The role of the Medical Interpreter involves facilitating communication between Spanish-speaking patients and healthcare professionals. Additionally, the interpreter will be responsible for translating written materials, both medical and general, into Spanish.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a liaison for Spanish-speaking patients and medical staff, ensuring clear communication.
  • Translate documents accurately into Spanish, maintaining the integrity of the original content.
  • Support the training and mentoring of volunteer language access ambassadors.
  • Utilize digital tools such as Outlook, Word, and Epic for documentation and communication.
  • Assist in educational initiatives for clinicians and participate in special projects as needed.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a dynamic and fast-paced healthcare setting, where priorities may shift frequently. The role can be physically demanding, requiring significant mobility and the ability to manage emotionally charged situations.


Qualifications:

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree is required. Candidates must demonstrate fluency in medical Spanish and possess experience as a Spanish interpreter within a healthcare environment. Proficiency in both oral and written English and Spanish, including medical terminology, is essential. An understanding of the cultural backgrounds of the limited English proficient (LEP) patient population is also important, along with strong writing skills and knowledge of the translation process.

Experience in a healthcare setting, along with formal training or certification in interpretation and translation, is preferred. National certification must be obtained within the first year of employment, with completion of an approved medical interpreter training program being a requirement.

Motor Vehicle Operator Designation:

Employees in this role will not be required to operate vehicles for business purposes.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Certification from the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) is required within the first year of employment.
