About the Position

The Montclair YMCA seeks an experienced Swimming Instructor II to lead our aquatics program. As a key member of our team, you will provide direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants in our swimming program.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct group and individual swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following YMCA lesson plans and conducts swim stage evaluations.
  • Maintain current swim instruction certifications.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintain records as required (progress tracker, progress reports, class rosters, etc.).
  • Attend department staff meetings, in-service training, and mandatory YMCA meetings.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.   • Organize and return class equipment to storage areas. Report damaged equipment. Complete incident reports as necessary.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
  • Responsible for securing substitute instructor and report schedule changes to the director in advance.
  • The position is identified as safety sensitive and subject to required, random drug testing.
  • Assist in all areas as assigned and complete all projects as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or WSI certification. Employment contingent on successful completion of YMCA course work.
  • Current Basic Life Support (CPR), AED, Oxygen Administration, & Basic First Aid certification must maintain annual certification in BLS/AED.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR get certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Minimum of 3 years instructional experience and performance reviews that exceed expectations.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.

Compensation and Benefits

This full-time position offers a competitive salary range of $18-$20 per hour, paid time off, and enrollment in the Y's retirement program after completing 1000 hours within two years of service.
