Job Summary

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking a highly skilled Forestry Specialist to join our team. As a Forestry Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring that logging systems, sale layout, sale planning, timber sale contracts, interdisciplinary (ID) team/environmental assessment (EA) work, and long-range forest management plans are technically correct and defensible.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement forest management plans, including timber sale and silvicultural service contracts.
  • Conduct forest inventory analysis, environmental assessments, and forest history reports.
  • Prepare data, briefings, or trainings to explain or exchange forest management information to the general public.
  • Provide program oversight on all projects related to special forest products, landscape forestry, reforestation, silvicultural treatments, etc.
  • Develop plans, assessments, and recommendations for environmental assessments.
  • Conduct briefings or trainings on forest management activities/plans to other agencies, special interest groups, or the general public.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • May be required to complete background investigation.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Qualifications

To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Basic Requirement, 0460 Series:

  • Degree: forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry.

Combination of Education and Experience:

  • Courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry.

In addition to meeting at least one of the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must have specialized experience and/or education to meet one of the minimum qualifications described below:

Minimum Qualifications, GS-09:

  • A. Specialized Experience:
    • Have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following:
      • Preparing and/or implementing timber sale and silvicultural service contracts;
      • Executing long range forest management plans such as logging systems, road layout, harvesting, tree improvement, or landscaping;
      • Developing forest management plans, forest inventory analysis, environmental assessments, or forest history reports;
      • Preparing data, briefings, or trainings to explain or exchange forest management information to the general public.
  • B. Education:
    • Have successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, in a field that included a major field of study or specific course requirements as stated in the basic requirements.
  • C. Combination of Education/Experience:
    • Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above.

Minimum Qualifications, GS-11:

  • A. Specialized Experience:
    • Have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following:
      • Planning and/or maintaining long-range forest management programs including timber sale and silvicultural service contract administration;
      • Providing program oversight on all projects related to special forest products, landscape forestry, reforestation, silvicultural treatments, etc.
      • Developing plans, assessments, and recommendations for environmental assessments;
      • Conducting briefings or trainings on forest management activities/plans to other agencies, special interest groups, or the general public.
  • B. Education:
    • Have successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or LL.M., that included a major field of study or specific course requirements as stated in the basic requirements.
  • C. Combination of Education/Experience:
    • Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above.

Status merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.

One year at the GS-07 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. One year at the GS-09 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level.
