Job Overview:

The Welding Inspection Specialist II is responsible for conducting thorough inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with quality standards and building regulations. This role involves monitoring adherence to construction drawings and project specifications.

Inspections may encompass various disciplines or focus on specific areas of expertise, including but not limited to structural steel, concrete, masonry, and fireproofing. The inspection process includes both visual and physical assessments, as well as field testing to confirm conformity with established plans and specifications. Detailed inspection reports will be prepared, documenting observations and material testing results.

Effective communication of findings to engineers or project managers is essential, and collaboration with the project team may be required to address potential issues. Adherence to rigorous safety protocols is a fundamental aspect of this role.

Key Responsibilities:

The Welding Inspection Specialist II will perform testing, observation, and inspection tasks as directed, in accordance with established training and procedures to verify that work is executed per contract specifications.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Providing clear documentation of findings and results.
  • Preparing inspection reports and documenting any nonconformance.
  • Conducting basic data analysis to ensure accuracy before communicating results to the Project Manager.
  • Interacting with clients and site personnel to facilitate appropriate resolutions to findings.
  • Assisting the Project Manager in defining the scope for testing and inspection services.
  • Coordinating pre-dispatch activities with project and department managers.
  • Maintaining equipment operation and calibration.
  • Supporting senior inspectors on larger, more complex projects.
  • Following safety rules and practices for all projects.
  • Conducting pre-task planning prior to executing work and reporting any safety concerns to management.

Maintaining quality standards across all projects is a critical responsibility.

Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with an associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology preferred. A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in construction inspection is necessary, along with a valid driver's license and an acceptable violation history.

Required Certifications:
Successful completion of relevant internal safety certifications is mandatory. Candidates must possess at least three certifications in the following areas:

  • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
  • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical (Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist).
  • ICC certification in various areas including Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel - Bolting, and Structural Steel - Welding.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT).

Other relevant national, regional, state, and local materials-related certifications that require experience and written examination may also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
